1 . იყო ვინმე მეფე ერთი ქუეყანასა ჰინდოეთისასა ,
ადგილსა , რომელსა ჰრქჳან შოლაიტი* ,
და სახელი მეფისა [ ჲ ] მის აბენეს . და
იყო იგი წარმართი ფრიად და დიდი სამეუფოჲ [ თ ] ა
და აურაცხელ სიმრავლითა ერისაჲთა ,
ზარ ( და საში ) ნელ ყოველთა ზედა
კაცთა , მძლე მტერთა მიმართ ; ლაღ , ამპარტავან
და შუენიერ ხილვითა ; ღრმა სიბრძნითა
და განგე ( ბუ ) ლებითა , მდევარ ( სიტყუათა ) . . .
( მოძ ) ულე ქრისტეს მსახურთაჲ , სახელი
მისი აბენეს . ( იყო იგი ) შეყოფილი გონებითა
ნებათა და საშუებელთა ამის სოფლისათა
და დამონებულ ნებასა თავისა თჳსისასა ,
და ყოვლადვე ვერ წინააღმდგომელ
შუებათა მიმართ განმხრწნელთა სულისათა .
არარას გულმან უთქუა სოფელსა შინა , რომელიმცა
არა მოეცა , გარნა ამას ხოლო ჴუებულ
იყო , რამეთუ არა ესუა მას წული შვილი .
ადგილსა , რომელსა ჰრქჳან შოლაიტი* ,
და სახელი მეფისა [ ჲ ] მის აბენეს . და
იყო იგი წარმართი ფრიად და დიდი სამეუფოჲ [ თ ] ა

land

India

in
the
place
which they call Sholait , 1 and the name of that king was Abenes .
He was a man of strong pagan beliefs , possessing great
dominions and armies countless in their numbers , fierce and
terrible over all men , victorious over his foes . He was bold ,
haughty and handsome to the eye and profound in wisdom and
judgment . He persecuted and hated the servants of Christ ; and
his name was Abenes . He was utterly immersed in the pursuit
of the pleasures and delights of this world and enslaved by his
own passions , and quite unable to exercise any restraint in
respect of indulgences which are so pernicious to the soul . There
was no desire of his in the world which was not granted to him ,
except for one thing that was lacking , namely that he had no
son .
