How to use Ugarit?

  1. Create an account on Ugarit. You will receive a confirmation email with a link to activate your credentials.
    Note
    • Use your real name as your username, so that it is displayed on the home page and you have immediate credit for your contributions.
    • Also remember to check your Spam folder, sometimes the activation emails land in the Spam folder.
  2. Login on Ugarit and click on Translation Alignment Editor -> New Alignment. Depending on how many languages you wish to align, you also have the option of trilingual alignment.
  3. You will be redirected to this page. Select the languages of your texts, such as Latin on one side and English on the other.
  4. Paste the texts you wish to align in the appropriate window, then click on Align.
  5. You will be redirected to the alignment editor. Add the essential metadata in the text fields. You must add a title, the rest is optional. However, it is good practice to add information about who has translated that text and when, and whether there is a link where that text is available online.
  6. Now start aligning! It is very easy: you just need to click on one word in one text, then click on the corresponding translation of that word in the other text.
  7. Once you have aligned two words, they will appear both highlighted in green, and the translation pair will appear on the upper bar.
  8. Continue aligning by clicking on each word and its corresponding translation. Notice that the column on the right populates with the translation pairs. Sometimes a single word in a text corresponds to multiple words in the other text: if this happens, you can also align multiple words! It will be sufficient to click on all the words you wish to align in the first text, then on the corresponding translation in the second text.
  9. If you realize you made a mistake, you need to delete the translation pair that you want to correct. To do that, you need to delete the translation pair in the column on the right: it will be sufficient to click on the “x”. Notice that when you hover with the mouse on one word that you have already aligned, Ugarit highlights it in red, together with the corresponding word in the translation and the corresponding translation pair: in this way, it will be easier to trace back to all the matching elements in the alignment.
  10. Once finished, SAVE! You don’t need to save each translation pair individually, but remember to save the last translation pair by clicking on the black disk button which appears on the right side of the pair, in the upper bar. If you don’t click on that button, the last translation pair will not be saved. Then, click on the BLUE BUTTON (Save or Save Changes, in case you are modifying an already existing alignment) to save all your work!
  11. If you want, you can export your vocabulary by clicking on Export Translation Pairs. Save that document on your computer: you can open and modify it with Microsoft Excel, Libre Office, Open Office or Numbers.
  12. You’re done! You will be able to see and modify your alignment by clicking on Dashboard in the main menu, and you will also see your name and the title of your alignment on the home page of Ugarit. If you click on your alignment from the home page, you will be redirected to the public view of your work.
