‘ξεῖν᾽ , οὐ καλὸν ἔειπες : ἀτασθάλῳ ἀνδρὶ ἔοικας .
οὕτως οὐ πάντεσσι θεοὶ χαρίεντα διδοῦσιν
ἀνδράσιν , οὔτε φυὴν οὔτ᾽ ἂρ φρένας οὔτ᾽ ἀγορητύν .
ἄλλος μὲν γάρ τ᾽ εἶδος ἀκιδνότερος πέλει ἀνήρ ,
ἀλλὰ θεὸς μορφὴν ἔπεσι στέφει , οἱ δέ τ᾽ ἐς αὐτὸν
τερπόμενοι λεύσσουσιν : ὁ δ᾽ ἀσφαλέως ἀγορεύει
αἰδοῖ μειλιχίῃ , μετὰ δὲ πρέπει ἀγρομένοισιν ,
ἐρχόμενον δ᾽ ἀνὰ ἄστυ θεὸν ὣς εἰσορόωσιν .
ἄλλος δ᾽ αὖ εἶδος μὲν ἀλίγκιος ἀθανάτοισιν ,
ἀλλ᾽ οὔ οἱ χάρις ἀμφιπεριστέφεται ἐπέεσσιν ,
ὡς καὶ σοὶ εἶδος μὲν ἀριπρεπές , οὐδέ κεν ἄλλως
οὐδὲ θεὸς τεύξειε , νόον δ᾽ ἀποφώλιός ἐσσι .
ὤρινάς μοι θυμὸν ἐνὶ στήθεσσι φίλοισιν
εἰπὼν οὐ κατὰ κόσμον . ἐγὼ δ᾽ οὐ νῆις ἀέθλων ,
ὡς σύ γε μυθεῖαι , ἀλλ᾽ ἐν πρώτοισιν ὀίω
ἔμμεναι , ὄφρ᾽ ἥβῃ τε πεποίθεα χερσί τ᾽ ἐμῇσι .
νῦν δ᾽ ἔχομαι κακότητι καὶ ἄλγεσι : πολλὰ γὰρ ἔτλην
ἀνδρῶν τε πτολέμους ἀλεγεινά τε κύματα πείρων .
ἀλλὰ καὶ ὥς , κακὰ πολλὰ παθών , πειρήσομ᾽ ἀέθλων :
θυμοδακὴς γὰρ μῦθος , ἐπώτρυνας δέ με εἰπών . ’
ἦ ῥα καὶ αὐτῷ φάρει ἀναΐξας λάβε δίσκον
μείζονα καὶ πάχετον , στιβαρώτερον οὐκ ὀλίγον περ
ἢ οἵῳ Φαίηκες ἐδίσκεον ἀλλήλοισι .

In this way , the gods did not give grace to all men ,
Nor stature , nor thoughts , nor eloquence .
For one man is weaker with respect to his form ,
But a god crowns the form with his word , and those cheering
Look into him ; but he proclaims , without slipping ,
With gentle reverence , and afterwards , he is distinguished to those gathering ,
When they behold him , as a god , going up into the city .
Again , another man resembling the immortals with respect to his form ,
But grace is not put around as a crown for him with words ,
Thus your appearance [ is ] very distinguished , but [ you’re ] not [ distinguished ] otherwise ,
Nor might a god make [ you better ] , you are empty with respect to your mind .
You stirred my mind in [ my ] beloved chest ,
Not speaking according to order . But I am not unpractised of contests
As you indeed tell , but I suppose that I am in the forerunners ,
because I had trusted in my youth and my hands
But now I am held by evils and hardships : for I suffered many things
Making trial of the wars of men and the grievous swells .
But even so , I will make trial of the contests , after enduring many bad things
For my story [ is ] heart-biting , saying [ these things ] , you stir me up . "
And truly , after springing up with his cloak , he took up the discus
Big , thick , and not little , indeed , thicker
Than the sort which the Phaecians throw among one another .
