τὸ μὲν γὰρ ἔτος , ὡς ὡμολογεῖτο , ἐκ πάντων μάλιστα δὴ ἐκεῖνο ἄνοσον ἐς τὰς ἄλλας ἀσθενείας ἐτύγχανεν ὄν : εἰ δέ τις καὶ προύκαμνέ τι , ἐς τοῦτο πάντα ἀπεκρίθη . τοὺς δὲ ἄλλους ἀπ᾽ οὐδεμιᾶς προφάσεως , ἀλλ᾽ ἐξαίφνης ὑγιεῖς ὄντας πρῶτον μὲν τῆς κεφαλῆς θέρμαι ἰσχυραὶ καὶ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν ἐρυθήματα καὶ φλόγωσις ἐλάμβανε , καὶ τὰ ἐντός , ἥ τε φάρυγξ καὶ ἡ γλῶσσα , εὐθὺς αἱματώδη ἦν καὶ πνεῦμα ἄτοπον καὶ δυσῶδες ἠφίει : ἔπειτα ἐξ αὐτῶν πταρμὸς καὶ βράγχος ἐπεγίγνετο , καὶ ἐν οὐ πολλῷ χρόνῳ κατέβαινεν ἐς τὰ στήθη ὁ πόνος μετὰ βηχὸς ἰσχυροῦ : καὶ ὁπότε ἐς τὴν καρδίαν στηρίξειεν , ἀνέστρεφέ τε αὐτὴν καὶ ἀποκαθάρσεις χολῆς πᾶσαι ὅσαι ὑπὸ ἰατρῶν ὠνομασμέναι εἰσὶν ἐπῇσαν , καὶ αὗται μετὰ ταλαιπωρίας μεγάλης . λύγξ τε τοῖς πλέοσιν ἐνέπιπτε κενή , σπασμὸν ἐνδιδοῦσα ἰσχυρόν , τοῖς μὲν μετὰ ταῦτα λωφήσαντα , τοῖς δὲ καὶ πολλῷ ὕστερον . καὶ τὸ μὲν ἔξωθεν ἁπτομένῳ σῶμα οὔτ᾽ ἄγαν θερμὸν ἦν οὔτε χλωρόν , ἀλλ᾽ ὑπέρυθρον , πελιτνόν , φλυκταίναις μικραῖς καὶ ἕλκεσιν ἐξηνθηκός : τὰ δὲ ἐντὸς οὕτως ἐκάετο ὥστε μήτε τῶν πάνυ λεπτῶν ἱματίων καὶ σινδόνων τὰς ἐπιβολὰς μηδ᾽ ἄλλο τι ἢ γυμνοὶ ἀνέχεσθαι , ἥδιστά τε ἂν ἐς ὕδωρ ψυχρὸν σφᾶς αὐτοὺς ῥίπτειν . καὶ πολλοὶ τοῦτο τῶν ἠμελημένων ἀνθρώπων καὶ ἔδρασαν ἐς φρέατα , τῇ δίψῃ ἀπαύστῳ ξυνεχόμενοι : καὶ ἐν τῷ ὁμοίῳ καθειστήκει τό τε πλέον καὶ ἔλασσον ποτόν . καὶ ἡ ἀπορία τοῦ μὴ ἡσυχάζειν καὶ ἡ ἀγρυπνία ἐπέκειτο διὰ παντός . καὶ τὸ σῶμα , ὅσονπερ χρόνον καὶ ἡ νόσος ἀκμάζοι , οὐκ ἐμαραίνετο , ἀλλ᾽ ἀντεῖχε παρὰ δόξαν τῇ ταλαιπωρίᾳ , ὥστε ἢ διεφθείροντο οἱ πλεῖστοι ἐναταῖοι καὶ ἑβδομαῖοι ὑπὸ τοῦ ἐντὸς καύματος , ἔτι ἔχοντές τι δυνάμεως , ἢ εἰ διαφύγοιεν , ἐπικατιόντος τοῦ νοσήματος ἐς τὴν κοιλίαν καὶ ἑλκώσεώς τε αὐτῇ ἰσχυρᾶς ἐγγιγνομένης καὶ διαρροίας ἅμα ἀκράτου ἐπιπιπτούσης οἱ πολλοὶ ὕστερον δι᾽ αὐτὴν ἀσθενείᾳ διεφθείροντο . διεξῄει γὰρ διὰ παντὸς τοῦ σώματος ἄνωθεν ἀρξάμενον τὸ ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ πρῶτον ἱδρυθὲν κακόν , καὶ εἴ τις ἐκ τῶν μεγίστων περιγένοιτο , τῶν γε ἀκρωτηρίων ἀντίληψις αὐτοῦ ἐπεσήμαινεν . κατέσκηπτε γὰρ ἐς αἰδοῖα καὶ ἐς ἄκρας χεῖρας καὶ πόδας , καὶ πολλοὶ στερισκόμενοι τούτων διέφευγον , εἰσὶ δ᾽ οἳ καὶ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν . τοὺς δὲ καὶ λήθη ἐλάμβανε παραυτίκα ἀναστάντας τῶν πάντων ὁμοίως , καὶ ἠγνόησαν σφᾶς τε αὐτοὺς καὶ τοὺς ἐπιτηδείους .

one
hand
this
year
,
it
was
agreed
,
exceedingly
at
length
this
freedom
from
sickness
with
respect
to
the
other
illnesses
occurred
for
everyone
;
and
if
on
the
other
hand
anyone
had
any
illness
,
then
all
was
transformed
into
this
one
.
But
first
on
the
one
hand
a
strong
heat
of
the
head
and
a
redness
and
burning
of
the
eyes
took
those
being
healthy
,
and
also
others
,
out
of
no
cause
at
all
;
and
that
from
within
,
that
is
the
throat
and
the
tongue
,
was
made
bloody
and
breath
discharged
both
harmful
and
foul
things
;
thereupon
,
from
these
,
sneezing
and
coughing
came
next
,
and
without
much
time
the
suffering
came
down
into
the
breast
with
violent
cough
;
and
when
in
the
stomach
it
should
be
firmly
set
,
it
upset
it
and
purgings
of
bile
by
means
of
all
such
things
that
are
named
by
doctors
followed
,
and
this
was
accompanied
with
great
bodily
suffering
.
Vain
retching
fell
upon
a
great
number
of
sufferers
,
having
given
in
to
powerful
spasms
,
for
some
having
been
relieved
with
these
symptoms
,
and
others
much
later
on
.
And
on
the
one
hand
outwardly
the
body
was
neither
too
hot
to
the
touch
nor
jaundiced
,
but
was
reddish
and
livid
,
breaking
out
in
small
blisters
and
wounds
;
and
on
the
other
in
this
manner
the
body
within
was
ignited
,
with
the
result
that
neither
those
with
delicate
and
fine
clothes
nor
anyone
else
was
dressed
rather
they
suffered
nakedness
,
indeed
,
they
would
have
thrown
themselves
into
cold
water
.
And
many
overlooked
men
even
did
this
in
cisterns
,
from
being
bent
in
from
unceasing
thirst
,
and
the
illness
had
returned
regardless
of
whether
a
greater
or
lesser
amount
of
water
was
drunk
.
Both
sleeplessness
and
restlessness
of
this
,
which
was
never
quiet
,
hung
over
all
of
them
.
And
the
body
,
at
such
a
time
,
while
the
sickness
was
in
full
bloom
,
did
not
die
away
,
but
held
out
against
the
expectation
of
bodily
suffering
,
with
the
result
that
they
died
either
in
the
longest
case
nine
or
seven
days
from
the
inward
fever
,
or
yet
holding
on
to
some
power
,
if
they
survived
,
from
the
going
down
of
the
disease
into
the
stomach
and
from
the
rising
of
strong
ulcers
and
also
from
diarrhea
of
pure
pain
all
but
a
few
were
utterly
destroyed
through
their
own
weakness
.
For
the
disorder
went
through
the
whole
body
,
from
the
beginning
,
starting
being
situated
at
first
in
the
head
,
and
if
anyone
prevailed
from
the
worst
part
,
indeed
,
the
attack
of
the
extremities
left
its
mark
.
For
it
fell
upon
the
genitals
and
on
the
furthest
points
of
the
hands
and
feet
and
many
escaped
having
been
deprived
of
them
,
even
some
too
with
that
of
their
eyes
.
And
forgetfulness
of
everything
similar
to
them
took
others
on
their
present
recovery
,
and
indeed
they
did
not
recognize
themselves
or
their
friends
.
