When nations and contrived granted me divine honours , when with one voice they named me as the new Venus , that’s when you should have mourned , and wept , and grieved as if I were dead . I know now , I realize that her name alone destroys me . Lead me now to that cliff the oracle appointed . I go swiftly towards this fortunate marriage , I go swiftly to meet this noble husband of mine .
Cum gentes et populi celebrarent nos divinis honoribus , cum no vam me Venerem ore consono nuncuparent , tunc dolere , tunc flere , tunc me ian quasi peremptam lugere debuistis : iam sentio , iam video solo me nomine Veneris perisse . When a great in-flux of numerous nationalities from many locales showered divine observances on yours truly , when they all in harmony announced I was a new Venus , that was the time to grieve and cry—you should have mourned for me then as for one snatched away already . I feel , I see that Venus’s authority—which I activated by usurping it—has doomed me . Lead me away and prop me on the crag that fate has apportioned . I am eager to undergo this happy union of mine , keen to see the highborn husband of whom I’ve heard .
