415αἴθ᾽ ὄφελες παρὰ νηυσὶν ἀδάκρυτος καὶ ἀπήμων
ἧσθαι , ἐπεί νύ τοι αἶσα μίνυνθά περ οὔ τι μάλα δήν :
νῦν δ᾽ ἅμα τ᾽ ὠκύμορος καὶ ὀϊζυρὸς περὶ πάντων
ἔπλεο : τώ σε κακῇ αἴσῃ τέκον ἐν μεγάροισι .
Thetis in tears replied , " My boy , my child , why did I birth you for such suffering ? Why did I mother you , take care of you ? I wish you could sit quietly by your ships , 550 and never have to suffer tears or trouble , because it is your destiny to live so very short a time , not long at all . But even as your death runs fast behind you you are the most unhappy man alive . A curse attended at your birth .
Thetis wept and answered , " My son , woe is me that I should have borne and nursed you . [ 415 ] Would indeed that you had lived your span free from all sorrow at your ships , for it is all too brief ; alas , that you should be at once short of life and long of sorrow above your peers : woe , therefore , was the hour in which I bore you ;

δὲ ἐποποιία μόνον τοῖς λόγοις ψιλοῖς τοῖς μέτροις , καὶ τούτοις εἴτε μιγνῦσα μετ᾿ ἀλλήλων , εἴθ᾿ ἑνί τινι γένει χρωμένη τῶν μέτρων τυγχάνουσα μέχρι τοῦ νῦν .
ammā baʿḍuhā fa-bi-l-kalāmi l-manthūri s-sāriḥi aktharu aw bi-l-awzāni wa-tuḥākī hiya hādhihi immā wa-hiya mukhliṭatun wa-immā bi-an tastaʿmila jinsan wāḥidan wa-bi-l-awzāni allatī hiya bilā tasmiyatin ilā l-azmina [ for illā l-azmata ? ] .
As for some of them , [ they do so ] by plain speech in prose for the most part or by meters , and they imitate these either by mixing or by using a single kind and by meters that that are without denomination except until [ these ] times .
