ὅταν ἡδονῆς τινος φαντασίαν λάβῃς , καθάπερ ἐπὶ τῶν ἄλλων , φύλασσε σαυτόν , μὴ συναρπασθῇς ὑπ᾽ αὐτῆς : ἀλλ᾽ ἐκδεξάσθω σε τὸ πρᾶγμα , καὶ ἀναβολήν τινα παρὰ σεαυτοῦ λάβε . ἔπειτα μνήσθητι ἀμφοτέρων τῶν χρόνων , καθ᾽ ὅν τε ἀπολαύσεις τῆς ἡδονῆς , καὶ καθ᾽ ὃν ἀπολαύσας ὕστερον μετανοήσεις καὶ αὐτὸς σεαυτῷ λοιδορήσῃ : καὶ τούτοις ἀντίθες ὅπως ἀποσχόμενος χαιρήσεις καὶ ἐπαινέσεις αὐτὸς σεαυτόν . ἐὰν δέ σοι καιρὸς φανῇ ἅψασθαι τοῦ ἔργου , πρόσεχε , μὴ ἡττήσῃ σε τὸ προσηνὲς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡδὺ καὶ ἐπαγωγόν : ἀλλ᾽ ἀντιτίθει , πόσῳ ἄμεινον τὸ συνειδέναι σεαυτῷ ταύτην τὴν νίκην νενικηκότι . ὅταν τι διαγνούς , ὅτι ποιητέον ἐστί , ποιῇς , μηδέποτε φύγῃς ὀφθῆναι πράσσων αὐτό , κἂν ἀλλοῖόν τι μέλλωσιν οἱ πολλοὶ περὶ αὐτοῦ ὑπολαμβάνειν .
Whenever
you
have
apprehended
the
impression
of
any
pleasure
,
just
as
concerning
other
things
,
guard
yourself
,
that
you
are
not
carried
away
by
it
,
but
let
the
matter
wait
for
you
,
and
procure
for
yourself
some
delay
.
Then
bring
to
your
mind
both
times
,
the
time
during
which
you
will
enjoy
the
pleasure
,
and
the
time
during
which
–
after
you
have
enjoyed
it
–
you
will
regret
it
and
you
yourself
will
reproach
yourself
;
and
with
these
things
compare
how
,
if
you
have
abstained
,
you
will
rejoice
and
you
yourself
will
praise
yourself
.
But
if
it
should
appear
to
be
the
right
time
to
undertake
the
thing
,
beware
that
its
charming
and
attractive
nature
not
conquer
you
yourself
,
but
compare
how
much
better
it
is
being
conscious
of
yourself
having
won
this
victory

do
something
because
you

recognized
that
it
must

done

shrink
from
being
seen
doing

thing

many
people

be
bound
