From Julia Balbilla : When Augustus Hadrian heard Memnon . I had learned that the Egyptian Memnon , when ignited by the rays of the sun , released a voice from the Theban stone . Spying Hadrian , the All-King , before the sun’s rays , he gave greeting as he was able to . But when Titan , rising into the Aether with his white horses , drove into shadows the second measure of hours , as if beating on bronze , Memnon again gave voice to a piercing cry ; he gave greeting with yet a third cry . And Emperor Hadrian himself gave many greeting in turn to Memnon , and left behind on the stone for those yet to be born [ these ] lines showing what he had seen and heard , and made clear to everyone that the gods love him .
