Tell

of
a
intricate
man
who
had
wondered
many places after he ravaged the hollowed city of Troy :
he saw many towns and learned many men’s minds ,
and suffered many wounds in his heart upon the sea ,
fighting for his own life and the return of his companions .
Even so he did not save his companions , though he longed to :
By their own recklessness they ruined themselves ,
the fools who devoured the oxen of Helios of Hyperion ,
He took from them the day of their homecoming .
Starting where you like , Goddess , daughter of Zeus , speak of these things for me .

great

were at home , having escaped from the sea and the war ,
but Odysseus alone , longing for his home and his wife ,
Calypso , the brilliant goddess , royalty of goddesses , was holding him back
in her hollow grottos , longing for him to be her husband .
But when the year came around to the anniversary ,
in which the gods had told that Odysseus would go home
to Ithaca , not even there was he out of reach of turmoil
even among his own beloved . And all the gods took pity on him
except Poseidon , who strove vehemently against
godlike Odysseus until he came to his own land .

receiving a hecatomb of bulls and of rams .
There he sat at the feast , enjoying himself : but the others
were together in the great halls of Olympian Zeus .
And Zeus , father of both men and gods , was first to speak :
for he remembered in his heart faultless Aegisthus ,
whom Agamemnon ' s son , far-famed Orestes , killed :
Having been reminded of him , Zeus spoke to the immortals :
