To my mind it is worth while to relate not only the serious acts of great and good men but also what they do in their lighter moods . I should like to narrate an experience of mine that gives me this conviction .

But after Solon ' s departure divine retribution fell heavily on Croesus ; as I guess , because he supposed himself to be blessed beyond all other men . Directly , as he slept , he had a dream , which showed him the truth of the evil things which were going to happen concerning his son . He had two sons , one of whom was ruined , for he was mute , but the other , whose name was Atys , was by far the best in every way of all of his peers . The dream showed this Atys to Croesus , how he would lose him struck and killed by a spear of iron . So Croesus , after he awoke and considered , being frightened by the dream , brought in a wife for his son , and although Atys was accustomed to command the Lydian armies , Croesus now would not send him out on any such enterprise , while he took the javelins and spears and all such things that men use for war from the men ' s apartments and piled them in his store room , lest one should fall on his son from where it hung .

12 Mas , a todos quantos o receberam , aos que crêem no seu nome , deu-lhes o poder de se tornarem filhos de Deus ;
18 Ninguém jamais viu a Deus .
12 Mas , a todos quantos o receberam , aos que crêem no seu nome , deu-lhes o poder de se tornarem filhos de Deus ;

11 He came unto his own , and his own received him not .
12 But as many as received him , to them gave he power to become the sons of God , even to them that believe on his name :
13 Which were born , not of blood , nor of the will of the flesh , nor of the will of man , but of God .
14 And the Word was made flesh , and dwelt among us , ( and we beheld his glory , the glory as of the only begotten of the Father , ) full of grace and truth .
15 John bare witness of him , and cried , saying , This was he of whom I spake , He that cometh after me is preferred before me : for he was before me .
16 And of his fulness have all we received , and grace for grace .
17 For the law was given by Moses , but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ .
18 No man hath seen God at any time , the only begotten Son , which is in the bosom of the Father , he hath declared him .
19 And this is the record of John , when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him , Who art thou ?
20 And he confessed , and denied not ; but confessed , I am not the Christ .

My children , latest-born wards of old Cadmus , why do you sit before me like this with wreathed branches of suppliants , while the city reeks with incense , [ 5 ] rings with prayers for health and cries of woe ? I thought it unbefitting , my children , to hear these things from the mouths of others , and have come here myself , I , Oedipus renowned by all . Tell me , then , venerable old man — since it is proper that you [ 10 ] speak for these — in what mood you sit here , one of fear or of desire ? Be sure that I will gladly give you all my help . I would be hard-hearted indeed if I did not pity such suppliants as these .

[ 4 ] This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created , in the day that Yahweh God made earth and the heavens .
[ 5 ] No plant of the field was yet in the earth , and no herb of the field had yet sprung up ; for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain on the earth . There was not a man to till the ground ,
[ 6 ] but a mist went up from the earth , and watered the whole surface of the ground .
[ 7 ] Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground , and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life ; and man became a living soul .
[ 8 ] Yahweh God planted a garden eastward , in Eden , and there he put the man whom he had formed .
[ 9 ] Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight , and good for food ; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden , and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil .
[ 10 ] A river went out of Eden to water the garden ; and from there it was parted , and became four heads .
[ 11 ] The name of the first is Pishon : this is the one which flows through the whole land of Havilah , where there is gold ;
[ 12 ] and the gold of that land is good . There is aromatic resin and the onyx stone .
[ 13 ] The name of the second river is Gihon : the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush .
[ 14 ] The name of the third river is Hiddekel : this is the one which flows in front of Assyria . The fourth river is the Euphrates . [ 15 ] Yahweh God took the man , and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it .
[ 16 ] Yahweh God commanded the man , saying , " Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat :
[ 17 ] but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil , you shall not eat of it : for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die . "

[ 17 ] but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil , you shall not eat of it : for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die . "
13 O nome do segundo rio é Giom .
16 E o Senhor Deus deu uma ordem a Adão , dizendo : De toda árvore que está no paraíso podes comer do seu produto alimentício ;

[ 11 ] The name of the first is Pishon : this is the one which flows through the whole land of Havilah , where there is gold ;
