크리세스는 아폴론의 상징인 황금 지팡이를 들고 아카이아 군에게 사로잡힌 딸 크리세이스 ( Chryseis ) 를 찾아오기 위해 아카이아 군 진영으로 갔다 . 그는 아트레우스 ( Atreus ) 아르고스의 군주이다 . 아가멤논과 메넬라오스의 아버지 또는 할아버지 ) 가문의 두 왕에게 간청하면서 말했다 .
" 아트레우스 가문의 여러분 , 그리고 용감한 아카이아 군의 어른들이여 , 올림포스 신들이 당신네들에게 프리아모스 성의 함락을 승낙하시도록 , 그리고 무사히 귀향하시도록 빌겠습니다 . 몸값을 지불할 테니 내 딸을 돌려주시오 . 제우스의 아들이자 궁술의 신 아폴론의 권위와 나의 청원을 들어주시오 . "

아폴론의 화살은 아흐레 동안이나 진중을 싹쓸이했다 . 열흘째 되는 날 , 자꾸 쓰러져 가는 병사들을 보고 딱한 생각이 든 헤라는 아킬레우스를 충동질해서 무사들을 한데 모으도록 했다 . 병사들이 뭉치자 아킬레우스가 말했다 .
