The passage of Aelian’s Varia Historia 2.9 covers the treatment of Samian prisoners of war by the Athenians and vice versa. In the passage 7.14, some philosophers and their military services are mentioned.

Χορός τάχα δ᾽ ἂν διὰ τὸν χθιζινὸν ἄνθρωπον , ὃς ἡμᾶς διεδύετ᾽ ἐξαπατῶν καὶ λέγων ὡς φιλαθήναιος ἦν καὶ τἀν Σάμῳ πρῶτος κατείποι , διὰ τοῦτ᾽ ὀδυνηθεὶς εἶτ᾽ ἴσως κεῖται πυρέττων . The choir says :

He rests quickly by the man of yesterday , who evaded us by deceiving by saying he was both as friendly to the Athenians and he spoke first against the things in Samos , since he is caused by that , then he falls to an equally ill fever .
