Clarification that Slackness in seeking Felicity is Stupidity

Heavenly Felicity : by this we mean abiding without passing away , pleasure without toil , happiness without sorrow , wealth without poverty , perfection without defect , honor without baseness , and in sum everything that any petitioner might request and anyone who desires might desire , and this for all eternity in such a way that it is not diminished by the passing of eons and ages .

If we could imagine the world filled with tiny motes , and a bird that takes one mote every thousand years , eventually the motes would be exhausted , but nothing whatsoever would be subtracted from eternity .

Once a man believes in the reality of this , he will need no urging to seek felicity nor rebuke for slackness in his pursuit , for any rational person would hurry to attain far less , and will not be turned aside by the path’s being rugged or his having to renounce the pleasures of the world and endure all manner of hardship here .

For the duration of enduring the hardship is limited and what is missed is trifling , and worldly pleasures fleeting and finite .

It is easy for a rational man to relinquish a small amount of money in order to get twice as much in the future .

For this reason , you see all of humanity , whether in trade or manufacture and even in seeking knowledge enduring humiliation , loss , hardship , and illness , however great their extent , with the expectation of attaining a pleasure for themselves in the future that exceeds what they relinquish in the present to an extent that is limited .

So why would they not concede to relinquish in the present to attain profits that are immeasurable and limitless ?

There has not been created in the world a rational man , desirous of gaining money , who , if it were proposed that he spend a dinar and then wait a month before being compensated for it after the month had elapsed with the greatest elixir that turns copper into pure gold , would not permit himself to spend it , even if this were a deprivation in the present .

In fact , anyone would not endure the pain of hunger , for example , for this period of time in order to attain by it to this great benefit , could no longer be counted as rational .

The existence of such a man among humanity is perhaps unimaginable , despite the fact that death lurks behind every human being , and gold is of no use in the hereafter .

And maybe he will die during that month or a day after the month is over and will not benefit from the gold .

None of this will weaken his resolve in the exchange , his being desirous of the reward .

So how is the resolve of a rational man to endure the appetites of the days of his life , which at the longest will be a hundred years , when the reward is the attainment of felicity without end ?

But the slackness of human beings in following the path of felicity stems from the weakness of their faith in the last day .

If it were not so , even the man of deficient intellect would take up the journey on the path of felicity , let alone the man of perfect intellect .
